ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA SPIDER, 1958
Built by Pinin Farina during February 1958, this early Giulietta Spider was completed at the coachbuilder’s San Giorgio Canavese works in Turin on the 15th of that month and despatched to the US importer, Max Hoffman (whose very suggestion it was that Alfa Romeo produce a two-seat convertible version of its Giulietta in the first place) on 5 March. Finished in Bianco and trimmed in black with a black soft top, a colour combination retained to this day, the car crucially also remains united with its correct engine.
All the desirable early features proliferate; the short wheelbase, the beautiful rear lights and the ‘tunnel-case’ four speed gearbox to mention but a few. Left hand drive, of course (they all were), all-alloy twin camshaft motor and highly effective Alfin brakes.
By 2014, the Giulietta had returned to Italy, where it became the subject of an expensive, detailed and impressive restoration, supported in the history file by a plethora of invoices as well as extensive photographic documentation and Alfa Romeo Certificato di Origine.
A beautiful example of Pinin Farina’s seminal masterpiece.
